Dr. Adam Lauring is a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine/Division of Infectious Diseases and the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at the University of Michigan. He received his MD and PhD from the University of Washington in Seattle. Dr. Lauring pursued his post-graduate clinical and research training at the University of California, San Francisco, where he completed a medical residency, an Infectious Diseases fellowship, and a postdoctoral fellowship in virology. He has been on the faculty at the University of Michigan since 2012. Dr. Lauring studies the fundamentals of how viruses mutate and how this drives the evolution of poliovirus, influenza virus, SARS-CoV-2. His more recent work utilizes advanced sequencing of influenza virus and SARS-CoV-2 specimens to understand viral spread across communities and the impact of evolution on vaccine effectiveness.
