Hannah Brown, an NSF COMPASS postdoctoral researcher at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech, has been appointed to serve a two-year term on the Journal Club Panel of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Through the PNAS Journal Club, panelists contribute short news stories highlighting timely and impactful scientific research published across disciplines. The panel is composed of postdoctoral researchers and graduate students affiliated with the laboratories of National Academy of Sciences members who are passionate, like Hannah, about engaging with scientific literature and identifying noteworthy research findings.
Hannah’s virology-focused research doesn’t limit her to a singular field – she notes that the articles cover all areas of science, allowing for plenty of opportunities to stay connected with researchers outside of her own field.
“I have always personally been very interested in science communication, so I appreciate that the Journal Club helps make complex research more accessible to broader audiences,” says Hannah. The Journal Club opportunity provides a structured opportunity to engage with new research on a day to day basis.
“I like the idea that a paper I recommend might reach readers who are not scientists, but can still appreciate why the work matters,” she says. Hannah is looking forward to broadening her own horizons and helping share scientific papers that people may not have come across otherwise.
